The biggest fear of getting a new tattoo, whether this is your first tattoo or your twenty-second, is infection. In the world of body modification the most common ways to contract infections are contaminated instruments and needles, unsanitary tattooing conditions, or improper aftercare.

A common myth about cross contamination and infection is that you can contract HIV while being tattooed. According to the Center for Disease Control, there has NEVER been any recorded or known instances of HIV transmission via tattoos or body piercings(1). HIV is a very fragile virus and it cannot survive long outside of the human body. Unlike syringes, tattoo needles have a solid core, so no blood or contaminants get inside of the needle. When you are tattooed or pierced it is only YOUR skin that is being worked on and only YOUR blood that is being exposed(2), so it is only your blood or bodily fluids you are being exposed to. You are only at risk of infection if you are in contact with blood or bodily fluids from an HIV infected individual. As long as the tattoo parlor or studio is reputable for its sanitation practices and used single use needles and tubes, you are in very little danger of contracting anything at all.

The two most common types of tattoo infections are caused by Staphylococci. As stated before, a viral infection is extremely unlikely, but a severe bacterial infection is a much more likely result of an unsanitary environment or unclean tools(3).

MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is the first type of Staphylococci infection and is located on the actual surface of the skin where the tattoo was placed. This infection is more readily noticed and can be taken care of quickly.

MRSA has a greater likelihood of contraction compared to any other virus or blood born pathogen. There are many ways to contract MRSA, but in the body modification world the most common way is from tool to client. Again, as long as you are in a sterile tattoo parlor with an artist that follows the Universal Precautions guidelines and CDC codes then you have successfully eliminated the exposure to infectious bacteria almost entirely(4). Prolonged infection on the skin’s surface can cause granulomas and create the likelihood of increased scarring buildup called keloids.

Cellulitis is the second kind of Staphylococci infection, which can be more serious and may take a longer amount of time to really notice. It involves an infection within the skin and under the tattoo. Below the skin infections cause intense pain and can eventually, if not taken care of by a medical professional immediately, seep into your lymph nodes, blood stream, bones and joints. When your tattoo is healing and sealing up with a new layer of skin pay very close attention. If the area begins to heal and there is still a large amount of pain and swelling you may be actually locking an infection into your body. This can cause gangrene, full body infection, abscessing, or even Necrotizing Fasciitis, commonly called by the media “flesh-eating bacteria”(5).

The signs of a tattoo infection are mostly noticeable within the first day or even the first few hours. An infection usually begins with redness, slight to extreme tenderness, and swelling. With tattoos that begin to advance in stages of infection there will be red lines or splotches going up and down that area of the body. This tells you that the infection is beginning to travel through your bloodstream, which will eventually reach your heart if not taken care of properly. The infected area will be hot to the touch and will most likely be oozing large amounts of plasma in the form of a murky yellow liquid. The area will then begin to puss a nasty brown, green, or red color with the onset of fever and enlarged lymph nodes.

If you are prone to sensitive and easily irritated skin, have had a previous health issue with your auto immune system, or have diabetes you surely want to consult your doctor or medical health care professional prior to getting a tattoo(6). Your likelihood of infection is much greater if any of these issues pertain to you. If you already have an existing virus or diseases, you should advise your artist. Not only are you at extreme risk for infection but you are also putting the artist’s health in danger.

It is crucial to know that the studio and artists are following correct and proper sanitation practices throughout the entire tattooing process. This includes rendering sterile needles and clean instruments along with using and autoclave. Each new customer should receive separately packaged and sterilized products for use on the tattoo. To ensure your safety, ask to view the autoclave and also watch the artist extract all of the sterilized needles and tubes as he/she set up their station prior to tattooing you(7). Understand that any instrument that touches the skin will surely come into contact with plasma and blood.

Now that you have verified or researched that your studio is sterile, it is up to you to follow the necessary aftercare instructions and procedures. Aftercare is just as important as ensuring you are in a clean environment. Be sure to check out “H2Ocean Tattoo Aftercare Tips & Protocol” for the proper aftercare tips and instructions.

Some other reasons for tattoo complications and/or infection are as follows:

Allergic reactions- Red dyes used in tattoo inks have the highest risk for creating skin irritation. You may not have a reaction for years, or you may react immediately. Red dye reactions may come in the form of raised bumpy areas on the tattoo where the pigment was placed, an itchy rash on or around the tattoo, or even large amounts of continuous scarring over the area pigment was used on the skin.

Possible MRI Interference- In very rare cases those whom undergo a magnetic resonance imaging exam (MRI) may experience swelling or a stinging sensation during or after the MRI. Some ink brands include small amounts of metal fragments as an ingredient in their inks as a color additive which can interfere with the image quality of that procedure.

You now have the finished product, which is really a large open wound that needs to be cared for, protected from infection and nurtured back to health and lasting beauty. Many a shop will suggest A&D or Aquaphor to heal a tattoo from the time you leave the shop through the following two days, while washing it 2-3 times a day with an off the shelf anti-bacterial soap. If the shop suggests that then they will most likely tell you to use a unscented lotion after those first 2 days till the tattoo is completely healed.

In all honesty NONE of these products were created with the intention to heal tattoos. A&D and Aquaphor are not USP (Pharmaceutical) Grade, but rather food grade. Also, these products are infused with mineral oil which is a skin suffocating oil and creates acne around or even on your tattoo. This leads mostly to scarring and ink loss. These ointments stick to clothing and bed sheets like nobody’s business which for you means your precious inks tend to rip out on those fabrics. This sticking leads to poor healing, irritation, scarring, and soon needed touchups.

Don’t worry there is hope on the horizon! H2Ocean has produced and perfected the only ointment made to truly heal and protect tattoos for those first two precious days! This magical product is called AQUATAT. Aquatat is USP (Pharmaceutical) Grade and also FDA Approved as a skin protectant. H2Ocean took out the suffocating mineral oil and replaced it with palm oil. Palm oil is widely known for its anti-aging and rejuvenating properties that are chock-full of antioxidants. Aquatat is clear, not goopy and brown like A&D, and glides on your skin like silk. This ointment never sticks to fabrics which ensures that you keep that beautiful ink in your tender skin.

As for using an off the shelf anti-bacterial soap…Many of those soaps kill all of the good and bad bacteria on your skin leaving your wound vulnerable to airborne pathogens, mutant/resistant bacteria, and ultimately infection. Many harmful ingredients such as fragrance and tallow acid are main ingredients in these soaps. These ingredients are toxic and not created for human consumption. Why would you slather on toxic materials on your open wound? You wouldn’t, that’s why H2Ocean has produced a phenomenal product called Blue Green Foam Soap. This soap comes out as a soft foam that is FDA Approved as an antiseptic and is the only soap created for the sole purpose of healing a fresh tattoo. H2oceans Blue Green Foam Soap is anti-microbial which means it also kills deadly germs as well as bacteria. The strength of this soap is unlike anything I have ever seen in the sense of it has the ability to help clear up a nasty bout of H1N1 (Swine Flu). Blue Green Foam Soap has aloe-vera in it to soothe the skin from stinging and irritation, while also working as an anti-inflammatory. It is not sudsy, but rather dissolves immediately into your skin while removing excess ink. This soap works with your skin rather than against it and ensures your safety as well as the lasting beauty of your tattoo. Apply Blue Green Foam Soap 2 times a day until your tattoo is healed.

After your first two days have passed you can now move onto the lotion. Again there is no store bought lotion on the market that was ever made with an inkling of the intention to one day heal a tattoo. All of those lotions sit on the skin and do not heal an open wound. The only lotion created for such instances as tattoo healing and rejuvenation is H2Oceans Tattoo Aftercare Cream. This natural and unscented cream has been a godsend for me personally through my tattoo endeavors and beyond. H2Oceans Tattoo Aftercare Cream is isotonic, which means it heals from the inside out and works with your skin to bring its beauty back to life. This cream gives your tattoo the ability to ooze its excess ink as well as soothing the skin from irritation. I have used this vegan and fragrance free product on everything from sunburns, acne, blisters, scratches, and scrapes. One tube of the Tattoo Aftercare Cream will last you quite a while depending on the size of your tattoo because a little goes a very long way. All you need to do is apply a nice thin layer of this cream 3-5 times a day.

Also, after the second day you may begin to apply a thin layer of H2Oceans Tattoo Aftercare Foam before bed. This foam locks in your ink seamlessly with its incredible ingredient called Dimethicone. Dimethicone is an ingenious and natural ingredient which is silica/sand based. Dimethicone acts as a natural liquid bandage that does not allow infiltration or penetration of airborne pathogens. On top of locking in your ink, the Tattoo Aftercare Foam seals in moisture while you sleep and alleviates the production of pussing, scabbing, or scarring. This foam has lysozyme in it as well that is naturally produced in our bodies. This lysozyme kills 650 different kinds of bacteria on contact within the first five hours!! Talk about an ultimate protector!

H2Oceans Blue Green Foam Soap, Tattoo Aftercare Cream, & Tattoo Aftercare Foam come in a new 3 piece kit called the Ultimate Tattoo Care Kit which makes having all of these necessary tattoo aftercare products easy to find and carry around. H2Oceans products are the only products “Made for the Industry, by the Industry”. As long as you use the information above to the best of your ability there is no reason your first tattoo should go any other direction but smooth. I hope that this has been helpful and your feedback is very welcome!

Now that you have paid for your first tattoo, you have your hand crafted and original design in hand, and are in a sterile environment…It’s time for initiation!!! Are you excited? Because I am and I am not even in the hot seat!!! Looking back on my previous article “Will my first tattoo hurt?”, if you are scared, just know that we all were. It is a feeling of the unknown and for humans, most of us anyways, the unknown can be scary. You have asked all the people you know with a spot of ink on them what it feels like and does it hurt I’m sure. Again, we are all different.

Some tattoos will sting, some will tickle, others will hurt a little, and then there are some that will hurt a lot. But we survive and keep coming back for more, and more, and more! There is a certain love and sense of accomplishment when a tattoo is completed. An adoration if you will, a rite of passage and a piece of your life you took head on, overcame, and quite possibly gave you a glance at the beauty you have within yourself.

Just remember that in this process of beautification you must try to SIT STILL! As long as you sit still your little bumble bee won’t turn into a piece of bumble-poo. Remember to breathe when getting tattooed. Also, especially if this is your first tattoo, eat before you sit in the chair. Bring a sugary drink with you and a snack to munch on through the session you are embarking on.

These little tips will keep your blood sugar up so you don’t pass out if you are scared and keep you hydrated if you are stressed and tend to sweat. Personally I have come to associate my tattooing experience with a good excuse to drink sugary carbonated beverages and eat junk food!!! Along with the food tip, remember it is okay to ask to take breaks. Do not force yourself or think that you must sit in the chair from the beginning to the end of your session.

You made it!! Your first tattoo is done and you cannot stop smiling. The artist you spent that entire time finding perfected your tattoo to a T and you could not be happier. Now, here comes another golden rule in the body modification culture..”ALWAYS TIP YOUR ARTIST!”. Just as you would tip a stupendous happy hour waitress that bowed to your every wish and whim for the last two hours, with a huge smile on her face the entire time no less. Tipping is crucial for tattoo artists. This is their bread and butter and the appreciation they get once a tattoo is completed. They created perfection atop your skin that will last you forever and they should be rewarded for such an accomplishment!

Let’s move onto the cost of the tattoo. Again, every tattoo studio is different, but remember this one golden rule and always, ALWAYS believe in it…”No Cheap Tattoo Is Good, & No Good Tattoo Is Cheap!”

Just because the tattoo shop down the street will charge you $100 less than the tattoo shop you had your heart set on that had that perfect tattoo artist you spent so much time finding, does not mean that it will match your expectations. Usually it will less than meet what you hoped to have adorn your skin permanently.

Tattoo studios with the best reputations usually charge a bit more than a shop you have never heard of. You know why? Because the tattoos that highly regarded shop puts out into the community are consistently beautiful, perfect, long lasting, and accurate to what their customers had wished for from their experience there. Don’t you want to pay that extra $100 for an incredible piece of artwork that will last you forever? Darn tootin’ you do!

Now remember, cost is not all about the shop, it is also largely based on where on the body the tattoo is to be placed. As you will grow to know, some places are more sensitive or more painful than others. This means the tattoo may take longer because of twitching, irritation, and possible squirming. The hot spots for highest sensitivity are the ribs, feet, shins, groin, neck, and the middle of the spine. Generally, the places with closely surfacing bones, tendons, and ligaments are the most sensitive. So just know that a tattoo on the arm will not be the same cost as a tattoo on the ribs. Also, areas with a high density of nerve endings will surely be more sensitive, which are the areas of closely surfacing bones. Not to our surprise research has shown that women have a higher pain tolerance than men. Most studies point this fact to women having the ability to withstand the pain of child birth. Men may be stronger but women can take more of a beating in the tattoo chair. Many relate tattoo pain as slapping a sunburn, the dull pain of a bee-sting, or slapping a rubber band on your skin.

Some people think that drinking before getting a tattoo will give them “liquid courage” or keep the pain from being noticed. These both may be true but NEVER drink alcohol before getting a tattoo because when you drink you are actually thinning out your blood which will make the working surface of your tattoo much, much more bloody and harder to work on for the artist. The blood will push more ink out than anything and you will end up having to go back for a touch up very soon. A good shop will not let you get tattooed after you have been drinking. Another blood thinner is Aspirin and the like, so stay away from those products as well. If you need to, you can always break one session up into multiple sessions and just work on small amounts of the tattoo at a time if that helps you with any over drawn discomfort.

Let’s start today with choosing a tattoo artist to master your first tattoo.

Listen, there are a million tattoo shops with 100 times as many tattoo artists. Some very talented tattoo artists can do anything from a simple butterfly to full realistic oriental back pieces. Though a lot of tattoo artists have a forte or a specialty they are tuned in with more.

Some artists specialize in traditional, some in grey wash, and others in biomechanical, and then others specialize in full color portraits and so on. You really need to think of what you want for a tattoo design and how you want it, then go around to your local tattoo shops and peek at every portfolio you can manage to grasp your hands around.

Artist portfolios frame the tattoo artist themselves. The prized pieces of each artist lie within its pages and show, quite literally, the true color, design, and styles of the artist’s soul and the skill of their hand.

Choosing a shop is the next step. Here are some things to consider when rummaging through local shops: cleanliness and sterilization performance.

There are some things to stay away from and be aware of when walking into a tattoo shop. They are as follows:

1) Is there a lot of dust and grime around the shop? If they cannot sweep, Windex, or mop the shop then how clean can their tattooing instruments be?

2) Artist cleanliness is key. I personally believe that personal hygiene is a very large decider for me when I choose a shop or artist. I don’t trust the cleanliness of an artist’s needles or machines if the artist himself/herself can not bother to clean the soot out from under their nails, the gingivitis from between their teeth, or kill the stench radiating from their body that could possibly bring down a full grown mammoth.

3) The shop owner or artist should always be very willing to show you the autoclave that they use to sterilize all of the needles, machines, and other equipment. Make sure that the autoclave is itself clean, not rusting or calcifying as well. An autoclave is a steam sterilizer that kills all bacteria, blood borne pathogens, and gross little microbes that could be possible contaminants to your skin and body. Some lazy artists/shops will show you a pressure cooker, designed to can food, as a “good” sterilizing tool. But he is not Betty Crocker and you are not trying to let him cook up a master bacterial recipe on your skin. So, if you come across a situation such as this, it is a good idea to just walk away from the situation. Before you start going to shops, Google appropriate autoclaves so you know what they look like. And if you seem to be feeling extra nosey and cautious, ask to see the shops recent Spore Test for the autoclave. This will ensure that the autoclave has been professionally tested and is certified as reliable and accurate to do the job that it should.

4) Make sure that the shop has proper biohazard bins for disposing of used needles and equipment. This is crucial for any shop to have. If they do not have a biohazard bin(s) in any work space then the needles are either lying around in your local trash cans waiting to be rummaged through, possibly by children, OR there is a possibility that those needles are being re-used! This is the worst and most dangerous fear of any person walking into a tattoo and piercing shop.

Don’t feel like you are ever being overly nosey, or overly suspicious because it is plainly your right to see what is about to be put in or on your body. Also, when about to get a tattoo make sure that each needle is broken out of a sterilized bag. This and every new tattoo is permanent and you do not want a permanent disease to go with it from not checking a shops sterilization practices.

These images are referred to as “Flash”. Tattoo flash is a kind of quick fix for a first time tattooee’s urges.

They are easy to choose from and even easier to tattoo, again because most of the artists have done that piece on at least 10 people. I personally picked my “tramp stamp”/lower back tattoo from a piece of flash on my 16th birthday. Two years later I met a local girl with the exact same tattoo in the exact same place. I felt so unoriginal and wish to this day that someone had helped me wise up and told me to, in some way, make the tattoo my own. Flash is a great builder, a great place to start on a tattoo idea.

One thing tattoo artists love is originality. They thrive to work on pieces that are new and special, a piece to be proud of and not to be replicated. So even if you do pick a piece of tattoo flash just make sure to try and add your own Oomph, your own pizzazz, your own flair and pop to it! Make that image stand out as an original because you know what, you yourself are an original and can never be copied. That’s what I love about you!

So you have been thinking about it for a while now, and the time has come for you to get your first tattoo. Feeling nervous? One thing to always remember when it comes to any and every aspect of tattoos and piercings, whether it is from the pain, or design, to ethics and social issues is that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT! This article series is designed to walk you through your first tattoo, from start to finish. I want to help you help yourself in this wondrous moment you are wishing to tread upon. There are of course guidelines and rules to be aware of and follow in the world of body modification and all of these you will know by the time you read the last word of this article. Are you ready? Of course you are..Let’s go!

Your first tattoo is usually the most memorable of them all like the first time you drove a car, the first kiss you received from a pretty girl, or when you bought your first legal beer. It is definitely a moment that makes you a part of an ever growing family, an initiation if you will. And for such a momentous occasion you should be ready and willing to plan for it properly. You may be asking yourself, “What do I have to plan for? Don’t I just walk into the first shop I see, pick a tattoo design I like off the wall and sit in the chair?” Well, of course that is one way to go about making your momentous occasion memorable, but believe you me there are many more things to take into account, to think about, to research and so on. Get a pen and some paper, put on that thinking cap and tune in to the world of the inked nation.

Tattooish (Ish Schuurbiers) has informed us that he has been Injured in a terrible accident where he has broken both of his Ankles. They are completely shattered, and he has already undergone three surgeries, and will need more. He is completely unable to bear weight on either leg at this point and will need extensive care.

He is currently at Hartford Hospital in CT. He will have another five hour surgery this morning. The purpose of my contacting you is that he will need financial assistance, and frankly, we are trying to get him any help we can. The hospital is discharging him Friday to a hotel, The Fairfield Inn, Manchester CT, with only two nurse visits, due to insurance problems from Curaco (his home country).

He is not able to travel at this time safely, and will need to stay near the hospital. This of course is a great expense to him and his assistant Sabrine who will be caring for him. Not to mention a terrible way to spend the holiday season. I have no idea how to go about finding a way to help him, other then to tell people what is going on with him, and seeing if anyone can help.

Do you have any suggestions of how we can seek out help for Ish and Sabrine for living expenses and medical, prescription expenses during this time? Any help or suggestions you might have would be very much appreciated. If you have met Ish, you already know he is an amazing artist, but a more amazing person, with a heart of gold.
